Instagram is implementing significant profile changes, including a shift to rectangular grids, which may not be universally embraced. Following August 2024’s vertical grid testing, the platform is now rolling this feature out to all users. This update replaces the current square grids, potentially disrupting carefully curated profiles designed with specific visual aesthetics in mind. However, users will now have the ability to customize post thumbnails and rearrange their grid layout. Furthermore, Instagram is increasing the maximum Reel duration from 90 seconds to three minutes.
In a recent announcement, Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the widespread rollout of vertical profile grids this week, transitioning from the traditional 1:1 aspect ratio to a 4:3 ratio. Acknowledging both positive and negative user feedback, Mosseri introduced several new profile features to assist with this transition.
“Most Instagram photos and videos today are vertical, and rectangular formats display them more effectively,” Mosseri stated. He emphasized that the updated layout will create a “simpler, cleaner space.”
Many users expressed dissatisfaction with this change. Creator Punktmidi commented, “You destroyed millions of well-curated 1:1 grids.” Another user, @matilde.alcini, urged Mosseri to “allow users to choose between square and rectangular grids.”
