Google is reportedly in the process of enhancing Gemini Live by incorporating support for a second language. According to the report, the technology company based in Mountain View intends to enable users to interact with the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in two distinct languages, utilizing both speech and text formats. This enhancement is expected to allow Gemini Live not only to comprehend the user’s input but also to respond in the same language. Initial indications of this feature emerged in December, and the company has since updated its support documentation to emphasize the addition of a second language.
Gemini Live May Introduce Second Language Support
Currently, Gemini Live, which facilitates two-way real-time voice communication, permits users to alternate between languages within a single sentence, with the AI maintaining comprehension and providing appropriate responses. With the right prompts, users can also instruct Gemini to communicate in two languages simultaneously, which can be advantageous for those who prefer hybrid language forms such as Hinglish (a mix of Hindi and English) or Spanglish (a mix of Spanish and English).
Although this feature is beneficial, there are instances when Gemini Live fails to recognize the second language despite repeated prompts. Furthermore, the support for a second language is limited to Gemini Live, which may hinder its overall functionality.
An Android Authority report indicates that the technology company is currently developing a settings feature that will enable users to select a secondary language. This functionality was discovered by the publication during an APK teardown of the Google app beta version 16.9.39.sa.arm64. According to the report, the option is accessible by activating specific flags. However, the publication was unable to utilize the feature, likely due to it being a server-side update, despite the addition of a second language.
In a related update, Google has revised its Gemini Live support page. Previously, the feature supported 30 languages, but this number has now expanded to over 45 languages. Furthermore, the page states, “In settings, you can add up to 2 languages to communicate with Gemini Live.
At present, there is uncertainty surrounding Google’s approach to this matter, particularly regarding the implications of introducing a second language for the Gemini AI assistant on Android, the overall text-based interactions with the chatbot, and the utilization of various Gemini tools within Google Workspace. The company has yet to provide any information about the potential launch date for this feature.
