Google Messages is said to be working on a ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature for Android devices

Google Messages is reportedly working on a new feature for Android that aims to simplify the process of managing messages sent by mistake. A recent report indicates that a remote delete function was identified during an APK teardown of the app’s beta version. This feature may soon be integrated into the stable release of the Messages app, allowing users to remove messages from the entire chat rather than just from their own device.

Remote Delete Functionality in Google Messages
According to a report by Android Authority, the remote delete feature is currently under development. It was uncovered through an APK teardown of the Google Messages app version messages.android_20250317_01_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic. The feature is expected to function similarly to the “delete for everyone” option available on other messaging platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp, with deleted messages being replaced by a “Message deleted” label.

When a user opts to delete a message, they may encounter two options: Delete for everyone and Delete for me. However, the first option is said to rely on recent updates to Rich Communication Services (RCS) and may only be available on compatible devices. Additionally, the message deletion interface indicates that users with older versions of the app might still be able to view the deleted messages.

Like other messaging applications, the remote deletion capability in Google Messages may be subject to a time constraint. According to the report, users will have a maximum of 15 minutes to delete messages for all recipients; after this period, the option may no longer be accessible.

It is important to note that this feature was initially reported last month, with code references indicating that its development was in progress. However, it has not yet been activated. Although the code hints at ongoing development, not every feature identified during an APK teardown ultimately reaches the release phase in a future stable version of the application. Therefore, users of Google Messages are encouraged to remain cautious regarding this development.
