WhatsApp for Android is said to be developing two innovative artificial intelligence (AI) features that may enhance user interaction with the application. According to reports, the messaging service is working on an AI-driven Rewrite feature that can modify a typed message into various styles. Additionally, this feature is expected to proofread messages prior to sending. Furthermore, the platform may be creating a two-way live voice chat capability for Meta AI, which would provide users with a hands-free method of engaging with the chatbot.
WhatsApp for Android May Soon Introduce Two New AI Features
As reported by Android Authority, the messaging platform appears to be preparing to launch a text-rewriting feature powered by AI. This information was revealed during an APK teardown of the app, where the feature was identified within the code strings of WhatsApp for Android version 2.25.8.5. Since this feature is not yet visible, users will not have the opportunity to test it at this time.
The AI Rewrite feature is reportedly accessible through a floating action button (FAB) represented by a pencil icon, positioned just above the Send button. This button is said to become visible only after the user has entered text in the chat or group text box. Once a few words are typed, users can tap the pencil icon to open a text editor, where they can choose from various text rewriting options.
According to the report, the available rewriting options include Funny, Proofread, Puns, Rephrase, Sarcastic, Shorter, Spooky, and Supportive. Notably, the Proofread option is designed to correct spelling and grammatical mistakes, while the other options modify the tone of the text.
In a separate update, WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo indicated that the messaging platform is developing a new enhancement for Meta AI. Currently, users can engage with the chatbot for text-based interactions, pose questions, gather information from the internet, create images, and send prompts as voice messages. However, two-way voice communication with the AI is not yet available.
This may change with an upcoming update. The feature tracker has identified a new call-like interface for Meta AI in the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.25.8.7 for Android. However, as this feature is still in development, beta testers will not have access to it.
Screenshots shared by the feature tracker suggest that the Meta AI interface will initiate a call-like session automatically once the feature is activated. Users will have the choice to switch to a text-only mode or allow the AI to respond verbally while they send text messages. This two-way live voice conversation capability appears to be akin to Gemini Live.
WABetaInfo also reports that users will be able to maintain the conversation even if the app runs in the background while they navigate to other applications. Additionally, a mute button will be available, enabling users to silence their audio in noisy settings. Users will also have the flexibility to terminate the call at any time.
